  2. Timor-Leste is an island that belongs to Indonesia that has a struggling history, but is making a huge comeback and dramatically improving its atmosphere. Given that Timor-Leste has been conquered and controlled by Portugal, the Dutch and now Indonesia, it has altered its way to become a very successful nation. Despite the small and hopeless stereotypes, Timor-Leste has been improving its economy, environment, and its infrastructure. First off, Timor-Leste has gone from ruins and destruction to cities with buildings and businesses. Those changes have occurred over a 10 year interval which is very impressive for a tiny nation that started off with nothing. Secondly, Timor-Leste's economy has positively changed. For instance, the “GNP per capita increased by 228%.” Another example for its economy would be that fact that Timor-Leste tries its hardest to not depend on donors from the international community. It takes advantage of the resources it has and creates community benefitting funds. Of course Timor-Leste is experiencing some struggles, but every other nation in the world does too. Timor-Leste has a long way to go until its improves their poverty and unemployment rates, but given what it has accomplished in the past decade, a bright future ahead is plausible.

    1. All in all, Timor-Leste will surely become a very successful and independent nation that will have enough supplies and money to support its huge population, and, potentially, share its resources with the global community.

  3. East Timor has the potential to become a stable country; however, East Timor must be weary of limiting factors. To begin, East Timor has thriving oil and gas reserves in the Timor Sea. Due to these highly valuable resources East Timor should be able to generate its own income. This income is already being used for development projects. In addition, globalization could help East Timor to thrive. To illustrate this, through globalization people all over the world are being brought the same advantages. Much like India, this could help boost East Timor's economy. However, East Timor has to be careful not to become too dependent on foreign donors. This leads to lack of agreement between the donors and the government about how to develop the country. Also, East Timor runs the risk of corruption. For example, after independence in Africa, kleptocrats took money for their personal use out of the millions of dollars in foreign aid flowing into the country. In essence, East Timor has the potential to thrive, but it needs to take caution while attempting to do so.

  4. East Timor is a new country which faces the struggles and tribulations if any new state but there troubles have been magnified by years of foreign occupation and major poverty and internal strife. Much of this has stemmed from the events that led to their autonomy in the mid-1970s. At this time the gained their independence from European rule when Portugal itself experienced internal revolt. This presented the opportunity for East Timor to become independent. Though not long after they were sacked again by the Indonesians who occupied their state until 2002 when East Timor finally gained recognized statehood following a long overdue UN intervention. Since then they have found reasonable success and economic growth largely due to their successful use and tapping of their natural resources. As such they are projected to become more stable as a state within the next decade or so.

  5. In 2002 Timor was declared an independent nation from Indonesia. Before that, the nation was in ruins, with barely functional electricity and no functioning hospitals. Nowadays the country has rebuilt itself. Some developments were made possible by the of oil and gas reserves in the area, and the help of the international donor community. They use the money to improve their nation and to find projects. While Timor is doing well, it has been running into some problems. The unemployment rate is high, and all of the population lives under the poverty line. Overall, I believe that Timor will be able to pull through and become a successful nation, as long and they keep a stable government and continue to have the support of the government.

  6. I predict that East Timor will build upon what foundation it already has to become a more modern and sufficient nation-state. With that in mind, everything could fall apart if conflict arises and war breaks out or corruption in government is exploited and the fact that this country has no limit to the amount of time one can have in office, this could lead to a dictatorship with the people and their resources being strangled or rapidly depleted in a dictatorship or an irresponsible leader.

  7. East Timor is a tiny island that went through years of being property of other countries, however has managed to turn it around and finally gain its own independence in 2002. Things did look bright for East Timor after their independence, however this was not the case because so East Timor was struck with internal conflict. For example, in the early 2000s there were multiple attacks between former soldiers, and the president of East Timor was shot in the stomach. This cause the UN to intervene multiple times to try to control the situation. If East Timor can avoid corruption throughout their government and internal violence then all the hard work that went into gaining independence for themselves will not be wasted. Even in one article it states unlike some countries, "East Timor takes great ownership of its own development."

  8. East Timor is a developing country that was owned by Indonesia but has gained its own independence and became its own country. In the future, this country will continue to grow economically and in the government. Currently the country relies heavily on foreign donors to provide money that it needs to continue to grow and develop. This has changed over time with East Timor being able to fund more important priorities for its own development. At one point in time, 70% of the buildings in East Timor were destroyed, this has changed and the country has been able to build new structures and businesses to help increase the country's overall growth. The Timor Sea has a large amount of oil which can be accessed by the country to help afford some of the expenses of the country and not have to rely on foreign donors as much as they needed to in the past. In short, East Timor will grow it’s economy and government in the future as it becomes more developed as a whole.

  10. I predict that Timor-Leste will develop even more than it already has, but in more depth. The small state has proven that they have good leadership and are taking control of their destiny by disregarding their label as a "fragile state". In the past the country was basically in ruins but the government has become more assertive and have rebuilt all of the fallen buildings, increased the number and variety of businesses, and have developed their own economy. They have learned to use the abundant oil and gas reserves in the Timor Sea to gain money to support themselves rather than relying on donors. Now that they have built up the basics of their infrastructure, I predict they will work to lower the unemployment rates, lower the number of Timorese people that are below the national poverty line, and overall, just develop all aspects which will help the state become powerful and successful.

  11. I predict that Timor will continue to thrive and eventually hold a much stronger stance in the global economy and world affairs. In recent times, the small and young country has seen immense growth in its internal economy, and as stated by the prime minister, the progress will continue. Timor has been able to build up its economy so independently based upon its plentiful supply of natural resources, which leads me to believe that it will utilize this solid economic foundation to expand its value into the global economy in the years to come. Despite the fact that the nation still struggles with poverty and unemployment, I think that these issues can be overcome with the determination of the
nation and its leaders. Minor struggles should be expected in such a young nation.

  12. I predict that East Timor in the upcoming years will continue to face difficult times, however, at the same time it will grow to be a stable country. In the most recent years they have faced the typical difficulties of a developing country. Although unemployment is near 23%, this rate should countinue to shrink as the economy increases. Despite having to fight for the oil fields with Austrila, they local jobs will continue to grow as infrastructure and education within the communities increase. All in all, I believe that the economy, infrastructure and government will continue to grow in the positive direction, but not without facing the struggles of a developing country along the way.

  13. The island of Timor has seen some bloody conflicts and disputes throughout its history. The Dutch and Portuguese both claimed it for much of the duration of the colonial and even imperialist era. Even the Japanese invaded the island during World War 2. In the 1970s, Indonesia invaded, which would spark a series of rebellions and resistance groups to fight over the duration of the next several decades. Massive killings occurred however the United Nations finally stepped in and it was able to gain its independence in the early 2000s. However, the country's infrastructure was in ruins, and moreover a new government and economy had to be built from scratch. Luckily, Timor was able to elect smart leaders such as Xanana Gusmao, whom have all contributed positively to the building of this new country. These leaders were all wary of corruption and planned to rid it from their government. Unfortunately, during the early stages of the newfound state, internal conflicts threatened stability within the country. However, oil has been discovered off the coast of Timor, therefore their economy looks to have a bright future. In essence, if stability and fiscal responsibility is reached, the country seems to have a future that is more favorable than its eerie past.

  14. I predict that Timor will continue to develop at a fast pace as it is now. The Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmao, has set goals for the country and has set plans to develop the country at a fast rate. The country has many things going for them right now as well. For example, their offshore oil and gas field has brought in 7.7 billion dollars six years in, they rebuilt most of the 70 percent of buildings that were destroyed in 2001, and they have many donors that consistently donate to them to help rebuild the nation. Their unemployment and poverty rates are currently very high, but I believe with the fast-growing economy, these rates will decrease significantly in the next decade or so. Overall, I think the country of Timor will keep growing and developing over the next few years because of the improved internal economy.

  15. I predict that East Timor will remain on track and push onwards to become a stable country sometime in the near future. Their abundance of natural gases and oil located in the Timor Sea has provided them with a major opportunity to create jobs and generate revenue. In addition, East Timor is using their oil money quite wisely, spending money on their own development rather than reaching out towards foreign banks or other money suppliers. On the contrary, their path to stability will not be so smooth. The country still has a 23% unemployment rate, and close to half of jobs provided by the oil and gas industry are taken by foreigners. Despite all of the challenges that the young nation faces, it seems that their future is bright and full of potential.

  16. I believe that East Timor will eventually manage to become a stable country and then eventually even thrive. Since it only has become a country ten years ago, it is still very young. The economy of the country started out very low, but in the five year span of 2005 to 2010, there was a 228% GNP per capita increase. This shows that the economy is increasing. Even though unemployment is at 23% and 41% of the people live below the national poverty lines, I believe both of those numbers will continue to decrease as time goes on. The natural resources will give East Timor the boost it needs to turn into a successful stable country.

  17. East Timor has the potential to become a stable country and in the process hold a stronger position in the global economy, including world affairs. Although, there are a number of factors that can stunt the growth of East Timor, such as the possiblity that East Timor could become to reliant on foreign sponsors and donors. This would be because the current globalization has allowed the entire world to gain advantages and to help one another more. This has caused dissent to arise within the government and the donors on how the country should be developed. Moreover, East Timor is a country with thriving oil and gas reserves that lie within the Timor Sea, and it is because of these highly valued resources that East Timor will be able to generate more of its own income. This income is already being used for projects that will develop the country further. Thus, based on the likelihood that East Timor will continue to utilize its economic resources to its advantages it will go through an extensive expansion economically. This burgeoning economy will allow East Timor to gain a foothold in the global economy and begin to truly grow as a nation both personally and globally. In summary, I believe that this nation will continue to grow and become more prominent in the global market, even though it currently has a number of struggles it must overcome, I believe that it will most likely overcome them.

  18. East Timor will be able to continue to develop into a developed nation with a more stable government in the future. One reason is becuase East Timor has a source of income. Oil is located offshore of East Timor which is used to accumulate wealth for the country. The income created can be used to further improve infrastructure and healthcare technology so that the country may flourish. Also, the coalition government is taking over East Timor. This government has hopes to improve the tension within the country which will also help the country to further develop. Finally, East Timor has been removed from the UN peacekeeping mission. This means that East Timor is becoming a safer place which means that there is less ethnic and economic tensions on the nation, indicating a more developed nation.

  19. East Timor potentially can become an economically and politically stable nation-state. Though it has relied on foreign aid and international donors, and continues to, it is becoming less dependent on international help and is using the money from its Petroleum Fund to help develop its country. Its financial independence means that it can grow and develop, and it has constructed infrastructure and human capital trust funds. Politically, it is not so fragile, and it is even being recognized globally; the G20 and the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness both asked for participation from East Timor and the g7+. Essentially, all of these economic and political developments and accomplishments set a steady course for East Timor to become a stable nation-state.

  20. Based on the recent events that have occurred, East Timor would likely be projected to become an economically and politically established nation. This nation has already faced and completed many of the major obstacles such as achieving independence from Indonesia and obtaining a substantial cash flow. In addition, East Timor has rebuilt itself from the destruction and conflict that it once faced, including the Ramos-Horta attack. However, the nation must strategically continue to flourish and not break any of the essential relations that it possesses, such as that with Australia. They jeopardized this relationship by making accusation to the officers about bugging their meetings. Losing allies like this will move them in the negative direction, away from stability, whereas they are already very close to this goal.

  21. In the 21st century, the government and many citizens in Timor-Leste have made great strides in attempt to overcome challenges in their country, but they are still struggling with some concepts and the donors need to support them as they continue to grow. When the author visited East Timor in 2001, the country was corrupt and unorganized. They could not even hold up a functioning hospital. However, since then, buildings and new companies were able to flourish, and the economy had been rebuilt to help stabilize some action in Timor-Leste. Also, GNP per capita increased by 228% in 5 years. It has also attempted to become a more independent state, as it has strayed away from donor money. Timor now funds more advanced programs, and attempts to build itself as the government is investing in bigger and more professional administrations. Even though they have made many improvements, they are not where they need to be in order to be totally independent. Many people are unemployed and live in poverty, and the government faces issues with their security sectors. They are still in the development process, so Timor-Leste needs support from Donors and the surrounding countries to help them evolve to their true potential.

  22. I predict that East Timor will encounter more trials and tribulations but through this they will learn new ways that they can flourish in the economy. Right now, they struggle with problems such as unemployment and poverty. In reality, this struggle can be overcome and the Prime Minister has bold plans that continue the fast path for this country. East Timor has flourishing gas and oil reserves which is a great outlet for money making. By increasing their interconnectedness with the rest of the world, they are bettering their economy

  23. East Timor is a small island nation-state that long been ruled by other nations. After a long stretch of time, it finally gained independence in 2002. Although this would seem like a positive at first, East Timor has had economic struggles since its independence. However, the economic status of East Timor could increase over time if certain reforms are put in place. East Timor has resource advantages, as it boasts abundant oil and gas quantities. If East Timor can continue to export these resources and being in more money, it should get the economic boost that it needs in order to become a self-sufficient nation state.
