PDP4: Kosovo Declaration of Independence

Author Biography: Jakup Krasniqi is the current president of Kosovo. He attended the University of Pristina. At the time he wrote this document, he was the speaker of Parliament but was elected president by the Parliament in 2010 when the president at that time, Fatmir Sejdiu resigned. This author may have bias based upon his nationalism for Kosovo. This document is declaring independence from another country. In some cases this newly declared country may not be wanted or accepted by other countries, but Krasniqi is a nationalist who is pushing for this divide, therefore adding bias that will appeal to the people that he is ruling.

Context: This document was written in 2008 while declaring independence from Serbia. Some countries do not recognize Kosovo as a state. In the 1990s there was a war between Serbia and Kosovo which could only be ended by military intervention. This produces political bias within the article showing that the state wishes to regain its connections with Serbia.

Summary: This document declares independence for Kosovo from Serbia. It recognizes that this state will be formed around their people and following guidelines set by the United Nations and other organizations to further develop in the Eurasian continent. They declare that their society is a democracy and that they are a sovereign state. They declare to welcome people in order to gain "peace, prosperity, and stability." They wish to be a part of the European Union rather than a part of Asia. Finally, they wish to tie bonds with Serbia by teaching their people to reconcile for their actions.

Key quotation: "We shall cooperate fully with these presences to ensure Kosovo's future peace, prosperity, and stability."

  1. Overall, you have coherently analyzed the following primary document. Firstly, you provide the necessary context, as you exemplify how the former Yugoslavia (Serbia) and the disputed region of Kosovo have been at war during the 1990s, which was not ended until the North Atlantic Treaty Organization intervened in 1999. In addition, you provide a rational summary which identifies the main points of Kosovo's declaration of independence. This includes once Kosovo becomes independent, they would like to follow in the footsteps of most western democracies and eventually get on the path of joining the European Union. Moreover, your key quotation literally puts the entirety of the declaration in a single sentence, which shows Kosovo's leadership is willing to cooperate with its neighbors. However, one personal feedback that you should be made aware of is using the correct word choice when it comes to describing the bias of the document. You say the author "may" have been biased, however his bias is set in stone. In retrospect, his bias is clear as he is the president of the nation that is seeking to gain independence. He definitely has biases towards Kosovo. In addition, elaboration on how Kosovo will "be apart of the European Union rather then Asia." You probably shouldn't use a term as broad as Asia. For my last piece of feedback, even though I believe your summary was coherent, I think at least one more detail concerning Kosovo's relationship with the Republic of Serbia after independence. This is paramount since Kosovo is literally seceding from Serbia, and it might be good to note how they will treat Serbia as their new neighbor and possibly vice-versa.
